Not only is the company’s just-launched cloud streaming service headed by Jason Rubin, a former Oculus executive, but VR cloud streaming is being talked about at the highest levels of the company. It’s critical for us to start with latency-tolerant games so we can deliver a good experience for players across a variety of devices.

The team has demonstrably thinned out over the last few months, with HoloLens veterans such as principal optical architect Bernard Kress leaving the company recently for Google Labs. There’s some ostensible background radiation related to employee attrition here too.

On March 25th, 2014, many people were left scratching their heads: why did Facebook spend 2 billion dollars to acquire a Kickstarter funded virtual reality company called Oculus. Oculus has sold an estimated 250k Rifts. As of January 2016, Google Cardboard has shipped over 5 million units. VR Consumption, 2016.

Oculus Connect 5 is taking place in a few days in San Jose, California on September 26-27th at the McEnery Convention Center. Last year, Oculus Go, a $199 standalone VR headset, has blown people’s minds. It is rumored that the Oculus team will spend a considerable amount of time discussing Project Santa Cruz at the event in California.
