Last month, we got to know that (according to a rumor) Samsung is working together with Microsoft on new AR glasses, most probably powered by a Qualcomm chipset. Samsung has apparently completed a prototype, and “is deciding the release date”.

A new FCC listing appears for an HTC Vive headset. And in fact, a new request to FCC for a new device has arrived from HTC. FCC certifications are requested before releasing an electronic device in the US (to certify that it is safe to be used), so this is a clear sign that HTC is going to release a new headset soon.

The Quest 2 is a great gaming machine offered at a ridiculous price, and it has totally crushed the competition. In the case of VR, we all remember the competition between HTC and Oculus in 2016, with HTC clearly winning the market until Oculus used Facebook’s money to slash the price of the Rift around 2017.

We already saw this problem happening when HTC departed from the Steam platform to build its Viveport store because hardware sales were not enough to have an ambitious business. Let’s see: Google is still working with Qualcomm and Samsung on a mixed-reality headset. I’m curious to see how this will turn out to be.

Last year we had nReal showing us that AR can be trendy, and HTC making us dream with the Vive Cosmos. Yes, the biggest companies were not there with a booth (Oculus will probably target the OC6, HTC the VEC, etc…), but it is the first time that I read the XR news from CES and I dont’ remain surprised. nReal clones.
