In his 1984 classic Neuromancer, characters entered a virtual reality world called “the matrix” (inspiration for the 1999 film of the same name by the Wachowskis). AR is being applied in training and education, healthcare, heads-up wayfinding and navigation, tourism, retail, field service, real estate sales, design and architecture.

Most people know Xu due to his dispute with American virtual reality company Magic Leap. In June 2019, Magic Leap accused Xu of stealing AR glasses technology when he was an engineer working at the firm. The company was later acquired by Google in 2010.
