When the UK-based VR studio, Rewind, asked me if I wanted to come and see a demo of its eye-tracking tech demo for the upcoming FOVE 0 headset, I was intrigued. Project Falcon , as this new demo is called, is an on-rails first-person shooter that uses eye-tracking as an aiming system for noisy machine guns and explosive rockets.

A Work in Progress: Virtual Reality

Sadly, it seems this may be the tip of the iceberg on the issue. Fove has created an eye-tracking headset, which other headset manufacturers may seek to include in future iterations. Franken wasn’t satisfied with the answers, and has avowed to continue fighting for consumer privacy in the virtual reality arena.

Eye tracking finally began dovetailing with virtual reality at CES 2016 too thanks to Sensomotoric Industries and their impressive demonstration of both gaze-based input and an implementation of foveated rendering, all on a neatly hacked-up Oculus Rift DK2. We’ve not heard anything of them since.
