On March 25th, 2014, many people were left scratching their heads: why did Facebook spend 2 billion dollars to acquire a Kickstarter funded virtual reality company called Oculus. Oculus has sold an estimated 250k Rifts. As of January 2016, Google Cardboard has shipped over 5 million units. Since then, we have seen a movement.

Right now we’re stuck thinking in terms of head-mounted displays (HMDs), like the Vive or the Oculus. Future solutions will get rid of clunky wired headsets and move onto glasses that can project a high-definition image onto the eye, a la Magic Leap, and eventually contact lenses that contain tiny screens.
