Samsung Display has begun developing its LED on silicon (LEDoS) technologies for an expanding number of augmented reality (AR) devices.

The Apple Vision Pro currently uses Samsung’s next-generation microdisplay technology.

According to Gong Min Kim, Vice President and Head of Technology Strategy Team, Samsung Display, the LEDoS displays will replace OLEDoS. Future devices will leverage the updated display technology to boost picture clarity, form factors, and power usage.

He said that LEDoS could potentially tackle issues with previous display technologies.

However, manufacturers needed to create even smaller LEDs. He added that Samsung Display has developed LEDoS LEDs less than five to ten micrometres (μm).

Kim revealed the news at a conference in Seoul, the South Korean capital.

The executive continued that silicon wafer technologies were the largest obstacle to reaching this goal as LED had completely different features than lamps. This led to less-than-expected performance for 10 – 20 μm LEDs.

The South Korean exec said in the report that augmented reality devices required radical conceptualisations compared to current displays. This is due to their close proximity to the eye, he explained.

Apple Vision Pro and LEDoS

The news comes after Apple reportedly shifted to the new LEDoS optical materials to boost resolution rates for its Vision Pro device.

At the time, the Cupertino-based firm requested them from APS Holdings. The new LEDoS materials would allow the Vision Pro to reach screen resolutions of 3,000 pixels per inch (PPI).

Previous reports from The Elec expected Apple to incorporate microOLED displays in the formerly elusive headset. However, the latest updates indicate a shift to even more precise PPI resolutions.

Philips Levels Up LED Specialities

In July, Philips also stepped up across European markets by appointing Marco Priebe as its Key Account and Business Developement Manager.

Philips announced on Wednesday last week he will take on the role for the company’s German, Austrian, and Swiss (DACH) markets.

The development comes as Philips aims to scale up sales and production of its own direct view LED (dvLED) technologies. These displays remove the need for LED panels, replacing them with surface LED arrays.

These result in massive improvements in colour, brightness, depth, contrast, and other performance metrics. Manufacturers can also scale them to size and shape in multiple situations, such as video walls.

Furthermore, the technologies have significantly reduced power consumption, allowing firms to meet sustainability goals.

Industry verticals like education, entertainment, retail, venues, and transport have begun leveraging digital signage technologies.

Priebe’s work at Philips will allow the firm to compete with rivals like Samsung, boost sales and marketing strategies, and expand product awareness in the audiovisual (AV) market.
