This week, Vuzix Corporation introduced INCOGNITO, a new integrated technology for the firm’s portfolio of enterprise and frontline AR smart glasses.

The leading supplier of Smart Glasses and AR products is using INCOGNITO to improve the optical waveguide design and performance of the firm’s AR product portfolio.

INCOGNITO optimises Vuzix’s product performance by removing “forward eye glow,” a first-in-kind technology within waveguide-based hardware – according to the firm.

Forward eye glow is a problem commonly associated with smart glasses, which causes light leakage, hazy visuals, and disappearing content. During risky repair or other frontline procedures, unreliable visuals could prove considerably problematic.

Moreover, Vuzix’s breakthrough enhances the low-light optical performance and the forward-light ratio of the firm’s leading smart glasses.

Paul Travers, the President and CEO of Vuzix, added:

Vuzix INCOGNITO technology makes the tech in a pair of AR smart glasses, or any other waveguide-based head-mounted display, virtually disappear. User privacy is greatly increased as this technology practically eliminates the ability for any other observer to know that you’re viewing displayed content on your device. While this is a highly desirable feature for consumer use, it represents critical functionality for certain military applications, where forward light in defense situations can quickly compromise the safety of ground troops and military personnel. We look forward to incorporating Vuzix INCOGNITO technology into both our standard and customized waveguide solutions as we concurrently begin to ramp waveguide production at our new high-volume, state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in the Rochester NY area.

Vuzix notes that the upgrades do not affect the product cost for its lineup of enterprise clients. To mark INCOGNITO’s debut, the firm is targetting deployment to its customers in defence, industrial, enterprise and ultimately broader consumer applications.

Vuzix’s 2023 Healthcare Success Story

Vuzix is deep in enterprise XR. The XR hardware manufacturer works closely with a range of end-users, proving the worth of workplace immersive solutions and driving adoption rates.

2023 was a successful year for the firm; Vuzix saw great success this year with healthcare use cases that showed how smart glasses can enhance productivity for healthcare professionals.

Regarding highlights from the company’s July medical report, Travers explained that it aimed to determine “where the market was” and how XR adoptors perceived using smart glasses in operating theatres. He added that it also sought to expand awareness of XR medical equipment, conduct market research, and better address the use of emerging technologies.

Travers explained how Vuzix’s hardware solutions could help a healthcare professional with remote guidance services in an exclusive interview earlier this year.

Travers added:

With our glasses on, he can stream HIPAA-compliant content to 500 students simultaneously. Doctors can talk him through the operation and explain everything that he’s doing, and it’s literally the catbird seat that you’re seeing [everything] through the doctor’s eyes. Additionally, we work with companies like Ohana One and Doctors without Borders, where doctors at smaller local hospitals in Africa need to perform operations they aren’t familiar with. With our smart glasses, they can get an expert from New York City, San Francisco, or [Baltimore-based] Johns Hopkins to join the theatre experience. The doctor or expert can literally walk them through the operation, step-by-step.

Additionally, Professor Shafi Ahmed, Chief Executive of Medical Realities, spoke exclusively to XR Today in July to continue discussing Vuzix’s ability to enhance healthcare workflows.

Ahmed noted that Vuzix has “answered a lot of questions concerning the limitations of smart glass technologies” with its immersive hardware solution. “I think this bears on how its users can access it much quicker and faster, or for example, set up the device in environments; the whole kind of platform that we’ve designed should be as intuitive as possible,” Ahmend also added.
