Image by Samsung). Everyone of us already knew that Gear VR was a platform almost abandoned when Oculus announced the Oculus Go. Anyway, officially, both Samsung and Oculus have continued at least to support it. This means that all new devices by Samsung won’t support Gear VR, that is so condemned to die.

Facebook has already launched the Quest 2 ; HTC hasn’t tweeted anything, so I expect it to not launch its Quest 2 competitor at this CES ; Nreal is still in the middle of its logistic problems; Samsung is silent; etc… I hope to be wrong, but I don’t think we’ll see any kind of disruptive XR headset at CES 2021. Compliments to FRL for that.

While Oculus is getting all the glory for the Quest, its competitors are not sleeping. Huawei has upgraded its sleek VR glasses and now they support 6DOF movement and 6DOF controllers that are very similar to the Oculus Touch. Notwithstanding all this hate, the Oculus Quest 2 is selling very well. Other relevant news.

Magic Leap 2 has inside-out tracked controllers. During a presentation, Magic Leap has unveiled some more features about its headset and controllers. Google is also hiring high-profile people for it, like Bernard Kress, principal optical architect on Microsoft’s HoloLens team, and Paul Greco, the previous CTO of Magic Leap. Samsung Exynos 2200 introduces ray tracing on mobile. Samsung has just announced its new Exynos 2200 mobile chipset , powered by AMD RDNA 2 architecture.

Microsoft and Samsung may be partnering for an AR device. According to Korean media, Samsung Electronics is working with Microsoft on a new augmented/mixed reality project “involving HoloLens”. Samsung is one of the most famous suppliers of components for electronic devices (e.g. Samsung Odyssey+).
