Making an AR headset accessible enough for consumers is a vastly different challenge to producing higher cost enterprise headsets— just ask Magic Leap.

While Oculus is getting all the glory for the Quest, its competitors are not sleeping. Huawei has upgraded its sleek VR glasses and now they support 6DOF movement and 6DOF controllers that are very similar to the Oculus Touch. Notwithstanding all this hate, the Oculus Quest 2 is selling very well. Other relevant news.

Right now we’re stuck thinking in terms of head-mounted displays (HMDs), like the Vive or the Oculus. Future solutions will get rid of clunky wired headsets and move onto glasses that can project a high-definition image onto the eye, a la Magic Leap, and eventually contact lenses that contain tiny screens.

This trend will continue in 2021 : the new LiDAR sensor, which is rumored to be installed in all future iPhones, will for sure be copied also by Android phones (Samsung?) while we have seen the complicated life of Oculus hands-on booths at Best Buy. Magic Leap will meet its fate. Duck Face, Magic Leap One, and me.

Facebook is launching the Oculus Go this year (hopefully) for an extremely low price of $200. According to John Carmack , Oculus CTO noted that the Oculus Go will perform "significantly better" than the Samsung Gear. Depending on the success of the Oculus Go will decide how the industry moves forward.

GB: Magic Leap is a big presence in the AR discussion. Outside of the sort of people in this room and in the games press, I don’t think most people know what Magic Leap is. When you talk about investment, certainly Magic Leap has garnered the most, but ODG just closed a big round. VR is inherently isolating.
