Let me tell you my first hands-on impressions on it! Project North Star is an opensource reference design for a wide-FOV augmented reality headset that Leap Motion (now Ultraleap ) has given to the community. The hand tracking was fabulous as always thanks to Leap Motion and its Orion tracking.

So at least the collaboration with Valve is true, but notice that it has not been on the headset, so they got no reference design from Valve, it has just been on the software integration. This openness reflects also on the hardware side, where Pico has just announced a partnership with Ultraleap to bring its hand-tracking device to Pico via an adapter. If the rumor is true, Meta by 2024 is going to basically release the Nreal glasses or a mix of Nreal Light and Magic Leap 2. I am very much flattered by it.

For those that want to design their own hardware, the OSVR goggle is a good reference design. Eye tracking software converts eye images into gaze direction. Hand tracking software converts hand position into gestures. Magic Leap is not commercial yet. Google Glass has not been as successful as hoped.

This attitude makes me understand that Facebook won’t release an all-in-two headset with a cable like the Magic Leap One, and will always go for an untethered approach. I’m not so convinced about this theory, though. Privacy in AR.
