Meta announced it’s overhauled its aging PC software with a few new features, which should make using Quest for PC VR gameplay a little less 2019 and a little more 2024, as it now includes more modern features such as a higher refresh rate on Quest 3, longer playtime via Air Link, and broadened support for nVidia 4000 series GPUs. Meta claims the v62 Quest update improved Air Link energy efficiency so much it extends session lengths by over 50%. In the Quest software v62 update that started rolling out in early February, Meta made a number of improvements to Quest Link (originally called Oculus Link), the built-in feature that lets Quest headsets act as a PC VR headset, either over a USB cable or through your home Wi-Fi network, known as Air Link.

The in-VR SideQuest app can now be installed onto your Quest with fewer steps, directly from your PC or Android phone's web browser over USB. For context, there are two different ways to use SideQuest: The original SideQuest program for Windows/Mac/Linux, which launched just days after the original Oculus Quest in 2019 and lets you install apps to your connected Quest using your PC, as well as tweak advanced headset settings.

visionOS 1.1 is now available. visionOS is the operating system for Apple Vision Pro, and presumably future Vision headsets too. Today it's getting its first significant update since Vision Pro's launch on February 2. The biggest improvement in visionOS 1.1 is to Personas, Apple's realistic virtual avatars. This week, automotive leader Ford Motor Company reportedly filled patents suggesting that the firm is working on AR technology for its upcoming vehicles. As reported by the Ford Authority, the firm filed a United States patent on June 27th, 2022, with the filling published on March 5th, 2024. The filling shows how Ford is developing an augmented reality-powered weight indicator, which indicates if an area of a circle is overloaded, such as the rear of a pickup truck.
