Apple Releases Vision Pro Development Tools and Headset Emulator

Apple has released new and updated tools for developers to begin building XR apps on Apple Vision Pro. Apple Vision Pro isn’t due out until early 2024, but the company wants developers to get a jump-start on building apps for the new headset. To that end the company announced today it has released the visionOS SDK, updated Xcode, Simulator, and Reality Composer Pro, which developers can get access to at the Vision OS developer website.

The extended release notes for the version 55 Quest software update read: "We’ve improved eye tracking on Quest Pro to make it more accurate across a broader field of view and during expressions like winking." Additionally, it surveyed the adoption rates and perceived benefits of AR for surgeons across regions in the Midwest, South, Northeast, and West of the US.

Apple Releases visionOS Software Development Kit For Vision Pro

Apple released the software development kit for its upcoming visionOS platform that drives the Vision Pro headset. The new software tools in the SDK for "Apple's first spatial computer" rely on eye, hand and voice input, and Apple says it is accepting applications for developer kits starting next month. In the meantime, the SDK accompanies the release of a new simulation tool in Xcode to preview and prepare content for the upcoming headset.

The Quest v55 update brings the promised CPU & GPU clock speed increases for Quest 2 and Quest Pro. The Quest OS dynamically adjusts the CPU and GPU clock frequencies to give apps the performance they need without wasting battery when they don’t need it. In December , Meta increased Quest 2’s maximum GPU clock speed by 7% in a software update. In v55, the company is increasing it by a further 19%, and also increasing the maximum CPU clock speed by 26%.
