After a period of significant silence about VR from the company, Valve today surprise-released a beta for SteamVR 2.0, a major upgrade to the platform’s VR interface which finally brings more of the platform’s core capabilities into VR. Valve originally said it planned to release “SteamVR 2.0” in 2020. But it would be Valve without the infamous Valve Time.

It’s been a bumpy ride for social VR platform Neos VR over the past two years partly due to being removed from Steam for heavily featuring its own cryptocurrency. While Neos VR was eventually reinstated on Steam, original Neos VR developer Tomáš “Frooxius” Mariančík has since departed the project and now announced a spiritual successor called Resonite.

Valve announced that it is shipping SteamVR 2.0 in beta today. In a prepared statement, the company said that it sees SteamVR 2.0 as "the first major step toward our goal of bringing all of what's new on the Steam platform into VR." The news arrives on the precipice of a busy week for VR. Meta will host its annual Connect event in just a few days, where it will share more details on Meta Quest 3 , its latest standalone headset shipping this fall.

Last week, Immersed announced its Visor XR headset portfolio for productivity. The firm is debuting a device with spatial computing features similar to the Apple Vision Pro. Moreover, Immersed is debuting its Visor product at a lower price than the Vision Pro, perhaps creating a wild card in XR competition alongside significant players such as Meta, Microsoft, HTC, Lenovo, Xreal, and Varjo.

Although Low Power DDR(LPDDR) memory has played a pivotal role in reducing PC laptop power usage, the drawback to the mobile-focused memory has always been its tight signaling and power delivery requirements. Designed to be placed close to its host CPU in order to minimize power expenditures and maximize clockspeeds, LPDDR memory is unsuitable for use in traditional DIMMs and SO-DIMMs – instead requiring that it be soldered down on a device in advance.

Red Matter joins its sequel on PSVR 2 next week with a free crossbuy upgrade. Developed by Vertical Robot, Red Matter is a sci-fi VR puzzle adventure that first released in 2018. Set in a dystopian Cold War universe, you play as Agent Epsilon in their journey to infiltrate a Volgravian base for a top secret mission. Today's announcement follows May's release of Red Matter 2 on PSVR 2 , which we called "the definitive edition" thanks to some major enhancements. ?

Next Move presents a unique platformer with joystick-free movement, and it's coming this fall on Quest and PC VR. Focused on platforming based around your physical movements, Next Move takes place across "dreamlike worlds" filled with fantasy architecture set against various challenges. "Climb to the top of a rotating tower, chase a fleeing gondola across a misty lake, and jump over crumbling stone pillars," says Prague-based developer Typico Games in a press release.
