Meta released a Quest software update via its public test channel (PTC), which lets users opt-in to try new features before they’re pushed out to everyone. Among the v57 PTC update is a feature that’s been notably missing from Meta avatars: legs. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg promised at Connect 2022 that its avatars would eventually be getting legs, putting an end to the platform’s characteristic floating torsos at some point in the not-too-distant future.

Varjo, maker of high-end XR headsets, today announced that it has closed a multi-million dollar deal to supply headsets for the U.S. Army’s Reconfigurable Virtual Collective Air Trainer (RVCT-A) initiative. The US. Army’s Reconfigurable Virtual Collective Air Trainer (RVCT-A) aims to deliver virtual training modules that are easy to set up and transport, making training cheaper and more accessible.

A clip found in Meta's firmware visualizes Quest 3 using its depth sensor to generate a detailed 3D mesh of its environment. Meta showed research which turns any flat surface into a virtual keyboard. Mark Zuckerberg posted a video to his personal Instagram profile showing clips of himself and Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth trying a surface-locked virtual keyboard in a Quest 2 headset. 0:00 / 1× Zuckerberg claims he was able to achieve around 100 words per minute, while Bosworth says he reached 119 words per minute.

A pulled Amazon listing suggests Quest 3 might ship from October 10. A screenshot of the Quest 3 page on Amazon Canada, which is unavailable as of this writing, showed a "Release date" of October 10. We've reached out to Meta for comment on this potential leak, and will update this article if we hear back. The 2023 Meta Connect conference is slated for September 27 this year.

Having received worldwide recognition for its compact desktop computers, Minisforum is looking beyond PCs to grow its business. Earlier this year the company introduced its first tablet and is prepping a tablet with AMD's Zen 4-based accelerated processing unit (APU) inside. The tablet that Minisforum plans to introduce will be a 2-in-1 device with a detachable keyboard and a stylus, according to the company's presentation in China , which was caught by Liliputing.

Meta Avatars finally have legs in Quest Home with the v57 update on the Public Test Channel. The company's virtual avatars have faced widespread ridicule on social media and in tech media for their upper-body-only appearance. The new solution includes the company’s Station Pro computing system and Max Pro augmented reality (AR) smart glasses. The prototypical augmented reality (AR) contact lenses will offer real-time, heads-up display (HUD) information to users. Powered with the tears of their wearers, the devices will incorporate slim, flexible battery technologies “as thin as a human cornea,” according to research.
