Quest 3 Pushed Meta Reality Labs to Record Revenue in Q4, But Also Record Costs

Meta today announced its fourth quarter earnings for 2023, revealing how Reality Labs has fared during the holiday season. It’s been a banner quarter for Meta’s XR division, with Reality Labs posting record revenue numbers, but also record costs. During its Q4 earnings call, Meta revealed its XR division had crossed over $1 billion in revenue for the first time, but also had its biggest quarter in terms of costs at $5.72 billion, resulting in a quarterly loss of $4.65 billion.

Unity Releases 1.0 Tools for Vision Pro App Development

Unity has officially launched 1.0 support for visionOS, making its now Vision Pro-compatible game engine available to all Unity Pro, Enterprise, and Industry subscribers. Unity announced in recent a blog post that support for visionOS is now out of beta, which lets paid users create three main types of XR experiences: mixed reality apps, fully-immersive virtual reality apps, and 2D windowed content that is resizable and repositionable by the user.

Sony Mocopi now works on PC via a partnership with SlimeVR. What Is Sony Mocopi? Mocopi is a $450 streamlined body tracking kit for PC VR that launched in Japan in late 2022 and came to the US last year. The kit includes 6 trackers. Each tracker features an inertial measurement unit (IMU) containing a tiny accelerometer and gyroscope. The data is fed into a skeletal model to produce a plausible (but imperfect) full-body pose estimate based on the relative rotations & forces of each tracker.
