A project from researchers at Reality Labs, Meta’s XR division, shows a method for interacting with the real-world through augmented reality. I’m about as seasoned as they get when it comes to the XR space. I see research papers all the time that are interesting but ultimately one more step along a predictable path. It’s rare that I come upon something that I’d never even conceptually considered.

Airplanes seem like an ideal place to dive into VR, as you can switch out the cramped environment of the cabin for a giant movie theater, or whittle away the hours browsing the web on a massive screen — something that shouldn’t bother your seat mates too much. Although Quest’s tracking is one of the most reliable out there, it still has trouble in moving vehicles like airplanes and cars.

Intel and UMC on Thursday said they had entered into an agreement to jointly to develop a 12 nm photolithography process for high-growth markets such as mobile, communication infrastructure, and networking. Under the terms of the deal, the two companies will co-design a 12 nm-class foundry node that Intel Foundry Services (IFS) will use at its fabs in Arizona to produce a variety of chips.

A finding suggests Meta could soon let you easily watch spatial videos captured by your iPhone on Quest. 'Spatial video' is Apple's term for 3D videos encoded and played using the Apple HEVC Stereo Video Profile format, an implementation of MV-HEVC. Currently, only Apple Vision Pro and the two iPhone 15 Pro models can record spatial video, and only Vision Pro can play it back natively in 3D.

Intel this week has started production at Fab 9, the company's latest and most advanced chip packaging plant. Meta has reportedly suspended its plan to bring a cheaper version of Quest 3 to China via a partnership with Tencent. To sell many kinds of products in China, foreign companies must partner with a Chinese company or set up a local subsidiary. Meta and Tencent's aim to sell Quest headsets in China was first reported by Chinese news outlet 36Kr early last year, though that report claimed the product was planned to be Quest 2.

UX Designer Andrew Fox reposted a video to X of Facebook user Netsvietaiev Oleksandr trying to use Quest 3 in passthrough mode on an airplane, but being unable to because the interface drifts away. Meta's CTO Andrew Bosworth replied to the post to summarize why it was happening, and finished by saying Meta is "working on it".
