First of all, Google has to keep the work on the headset very secret also internally , because Samsung is afraid that Google will steal its expertise to build a competing product. Samsung can be the first partner also on this line of products. All these premises are not good: confusion is never a good sign in business.

This is huge because we know that Samsung is able to always deliver good hardware.

All these data together make me a bit skeptical about the capabilities of this company: developing such kind of a high-quality headset requires a lot of expertise, while the company is very small and features no known expert in the field. Stanford and Samsung create a super-high-resolution display.

It’s interesting to read that the displays also support a foveated-rendering mode, which cuts down the transmitted data bandwidth to 60%. Magic Leap managed to stimulate a lot of hype for its headset, which should have revolutionized XR and instead turned out to be just a HoloLens clone. This seems a great result to me.

This trend will continue in 2021 : the new LiDAR sensor, which is rumored to be installed in all future iPhones, will for sure be copied also by Android phones (Samsung?) And even if Google harvests data exactly as Facebook, it has been targeted by fewer scandals, so it is a brand people like more. Magic Leap will meet its fate.

GB: Magic Leap is a big presence in the AR discussion. Outside of the sort of people in this room and in the games press, I don’t think most people know what Magic Leap is. When you talk about investment, certainly Magic Leap has garnered the most, but ODG just closed a big round. VR is inherently isolating.
