These are huge numbers for VR: if you look at the most recent SteamVR survey, you get that Oculus headsets are now at 67% of the whole PCVR market. Meta is trying to find a compromise with the EU, but if it doesn’t happen, it is threatening to leave its business in Europe, shutting down Facebook and Instagram in the whole European Union.

HTC advertises it as a headset for relaxation and productivity because it wants to position it as a different product than a gaming machine like Oculus Quest 2. UPDATE (2021.10.19): Road To VR also suggests that this hiring can be used to have a strong voice on regulations happening in Europe.

Oculus has also partnered with Virtuclear to offer prescription lenses for the Quest 2 for $80. All the 3 major VR runtimes (Oculus, SteamVR, Microsoft) are now compatible with OpenXR , and this means that on the runtime layer on PC, now OpenXR has been fully integrated.

I expect the smartglasses from Facebook, first of all, to be Facebook-branded (so, goodbye Oculus), to be very stylish (remember that Luxottica is the leading company for glasses and sunglasses), and to be able to connect to the smartphone without a tether. It doesn’t seem to be on par with the Oculus Quest 2, but as a first device by Nolo, it is not that bad. A decent budget for Microsoft and Facebook… but something impossible for companies like HTC or Magic Leap (do you remember when we all thought that $2.5B It looks like a refreshed Vive Focus Plus. was a lot of money?).
