I have been talking with hundreds of people across the industry and have discovered that the changes coming to Apple are deeper than just a VR/AR headset. This is the fourth paradigm shift for Apple. So, what is Apple getting ready to announce over the next year? Eventually, I hear, Apple will even bring 3D to 2D monitors.

This is confirmed also by a previous prediction by the CEO of Unity, which foresees that in 2030 VR headsets will be as popular as gaming console: that is mainstream, but still not as TV, for instance. Inside this growing VR market, the headset that is selling the most is the Oculus Quest 2. Facebook totals now 60.2%

In 2020, the AR market was worth around $7 billion, and experts predict that this number will rise to $152 billion by 2030. As for Virtual Reality (VR), it’s a complete immersion into a virtual world, shutting off the physical world entirely through special VR devices like HTC Vive, Google Cardboard, and Oculus Rift.

Multiple reports seem to confirm that Oculus is actually starting the production of a new Oculus Quest headset, with an expected release date in 2021. Google’s investment for a 7.7% of units more produced annually.

Well, if the rumor becomes reality, this would mean that all next Apple devices will have both front and back depth cameras, for high-precision Augmented Reality and 3D reconstruction. Think about what happened to VR: we had the Oculus devkits, which interested only us developers. Maybe this “big thing” will be the famous Apple headset, which thanks to the Apple brand and some key innovations, will draw new people into our market. It is not a continuous line, but there are many jumps.
