Google reportedly asked Meta to partner and "contribute to" its upcoming XR platform, but Meta said no. The Meta Quest operating system is a fork of the open-source core of Android (known as AOSP), a similar strategy to Amazon's Fire OS for its Fire tablets. We would love to partner with them.

The historical moment of the launch of Quest 1 (Image by TechCrunch) Oculus Quest 1 launched in 2019 for $399. And Quest 2 is much cheaper (especially now that has been put at $199): during the last holidays, it outperformed the Quest 3 by a factor 3:1 on Amazon US. So I see Holiday 2024 as the trampoline for Quest 3.

Any phone maker can integrate the open-source core of Android for free and without permission, and can integrate Google's services and the Google Play Store by agreeing to certain compatibility criteria and preinstalling Google's suite of apps. Further, Google itself is seemingly preparing to be the Android of XR with.

Luckily there is AR that is still strong, and we can hope to wear Google AR glasses soon… ah no, they are dead too. Meta is reported to launch a devkit of AR glasses, codenamed Orion, in 2024. Ah no, not even that because also Twitter is dead. Now it’s called X and aims at becoming the Western WeChat.

Waiting until now would mean that next VR game by Valve would come out in 2024–2025… do you really think they don’t want to make the ecosystem to grow now? Oculus Quest is available again in some countries. In some countries (not US), Oculus Quest and Rift S have got back in stock. Oculus rolls out runtime v15 for Quest.
