Preorders are open now with just a little deposit of $10, shipping in 2021. A new FCC listing appears for an HTC Vive headset. And in fact, a new request to FCC for a new device has arrived from HTC. Since HTC has always made announcements during the CES, I think it will be announced in January. But I can speculate.

Samsung confirmed at CES in January that its Oculus engineered Samsung Gear VR headset had passed an install base figure of 5 Million and more recently Google affirmed that it had shipped over 10 Million Cardboard viewers.

This era ended with the launch of the first consumer-oriented PC VR headsets: the HTC Vive and the Oculus Rift CV1. Google joined forces with Samsung (and Qualcomm) to release a new headset soon. Google also owns popular services like the G-doc suite or Gmail. The interface of the Lenovo Mirage Solo, designed by Google.

If you recall, Zuckerberg specifically got Meta into XR because he wanted to free his company from the grip of Apple and Google (the prevailing gatekeepers of the smartphone era). That leaves HTC to fall back to the enterprise sector, the one place where it has long had a strong reputation.
