Sony’s New 3D Display Doesn’t Require Any Glasses

Sony announced a new addition to its growing lineup of Spatial Reality Displays.

Available for purchase next month, the ELF-SR2 is a 27-inch 4K display that can supposedly deliver immersive 3D content without the need for additional hardware, such as augmented reality (AR) glasses or a VR headset.

Compared to previous models, the ELF-SR2 features an improved vision sensor and various image quality-enhancing technologies as well as more robust functionality and installation flexibility. According to the company, the device is designed for use by architects, engineers, industrial designers, software and game developers, and various other professions. There are even practical use cases for modern retail spaces, as pictured below.

The ELF-SR2 features facial tracking technology and a wide viewing angle, allowing users to view 3D content consistently from a number of different vantage points. In terms of SDKs, the device is compatible with Unity and Unreal Engine and supports development using Open GL and DirectX11/12 (Open XR coming later this year).

The new Spatial Reality Display App Select website will allow you to explore compatible applications as well as relevant use cases and studies. There’s also the Spatial Reality Display Player app, which can be used to easily display 3D projects.

“Our original Spatial Reality Display continues to captivate customers by bringing 3D content to life with an astonishing authenticity and sophistication that demands to be experienced hands-on,” said Rich Ventura, vice president of Professional Display Solutions at Sony Electronics, in an official release.

“While our users love the technology, we keep hearing the same question from professionals; ‘does this display come in a larger size?’ As we expand into more B2B verticals and environments, I’m happy to say that in addition to a bigger screen, we’ve added some powerful and commonly requested features to enhance content production. These include a wider color gamut, a newly developed engine, more advanced high-speed sensors, and rich support for applications and their development – all for an extremely competitive price.”

The ELF-SR2 is compatible with a number of PCs and is designed to be easily transportable. The device will be available for $5,000 this May in the United States and Canada. Those in attendance at the upcoming NAB Show later this month in Las Vegas, Nevada can check it out in person. The ELF-SR2 will also make an appearance at the Augmented World Expo (AWE) taking place May 31-June 2 in Santa Clara, California.
