FundamentalVR is an immersive learning platform which answers the demand for high-quality, repeatable, and efficient training scenarios for healthcare students. The platform simulates various healthcare scenarios so that students can learn with difficult-to-procure virtual equipment.

Additionally, the service supports dispersed and at-home classrooms with immersive group learning opportunities. The platform’s unlimited multi-user mode lets a host considerably scale its passive and active participants.

In August, FundamentalVR also secured roughly $50 million in funding to grow its product and reach.

Partnering with MITIE

FundamentalVR teamed up with the Houston Methodist Institute for Technology, Innovation, and Education (MITIE) on Tuesday to launch the MITIEverse, scaling the breadth of its healthcare learning.

MITIE is a hands-on clinical medical training facility. The partnership enables the institution to introduce its education and training methodology to new virtual audiences.

Stuart Corr, PhD, the Inventor of the MITIEverse and Director of Innovation Systems Engineering at Houston Methodist, said the new service could be the first step toward building a medical metaverse.

The service also presents a “borderless” operating room, meaning that international medical professionals can join in and provide expert insight.

FundamentalVR also lets medical tutors host virtual lectures in immersive auditoriums. Its engine allows MITIEverse learners to participate in group surgical simulations and showcases.

The MITIEverse also contains virtual study spaces, allowing students to collaborate and work together in an immersive VR environment. The service also comes with DeBakey Heart and Vascular Center’s showcase rooms, with spaces enabling students to observe professionals performing surgeries and reviewing 3D human models.

A Paradigm-Shift in Healthcare Learning

Alan Lumsden, M.D. of the Houston Methodist DeBakey Heart and Vascular Center, noted the MITIEverse service is a paradigm-shifting platform due to its new avenues for education, training, and collaboration within the health community.

MITIEverse brings together medical students with global experts, helping to build international healthcare expertise without barriers such as travel that stops an individual from learning.

Lumsden concluded,

“It essentially democratizes access to health care educators and innovators by breaking down physical barriers. There’s no need to travel thousands of miles to attend a conference when you can patch into the MITIEverse”

In the broader education and collaboration marketplace, solutions like EngageXR, GigXR, and Virbela aim to secure connected environments that provide borderless remote guidance.
