Report Suggests Oculus Rift is Finally Heading to South Korea

When the Oculus Rift launched earlier this year, it started shipping to 20 countries, missing out on some major territories. One of those countries could soon be getting the device, though.

The Korea Herald is reporting that Oculus has filed an application to receive what it calls “mandatory radio wave certification” for the Rift in South Korea. The site states that every electronic device that runs on a network must have this certificate, granted from the Korea Communications Commission, in order to be sold in the country. That certainly suggests that Oculus is soon planning to release the device in the country. Oculus previously cited government regulations as to why the device was not shipping there.

Still, you might have thought South Korea would be one of the first countries to get the Rift, given its reputation as a high-tech hub. The country is also the home of Samsung Electronics, the tech giant that Oculus partnered with to release the Gear VR mobile-based headset, which has been available in South Korea for some time. That said, Oculus has had shipping troubles ever since the Rift launched a few months back, so it’s had to choose its shipping locations sparingly.

Thankfully, those issues are clearing up, which could be why Oculus is now looking to expand its locations. Just yesterday the company committed to now shipping the device within four days or less for anyone that orders it from the official site. All pre-orders have been shipped and Oculus is now looking to prepare for the launch of its position-tracked controllers, Oculus Touch, which are set to hit in Q4 2016. CEO Brendan Iribe has promised that the devices would ship “in volume”, so hopefully shipping issues are a thing of the past. We expect to hear more at the newly-announced Oculus Connect 3.

Hopefully, this could mean yet more countries are added to the Rift’s shipping list in the near future.
