Idris Elba takes on a killer lion in new trailer for Beast

It looks like Jurassic World: Dominion won’t be Universal Pictures’ only summer film that features killer animals. In the first trailer for Beast, Idris Elba’s Dr. Nate Daniels comes face-to-face with a murderous lion. And this big cat simply won’t be placated, even though neither Nate nor his family have ever done anything to provoke it.

The trailer also introduces Sharlto Copley’s Martin Battles, a good friend of the Daniels family. Nate took his teenage girls back to South Africa in an attempt to emotionally reconnect to them after their mother’s death. Unfortunately, the Daniels family and Martin soon find themselves fighting for their lives. Not even hiding in a car can protect them from this bloodthirsty lion. But the king of the jungle has good reasons to hate all humans. Unfortunately, that means it’s kill or be killed if Nate and his family hope to survive.

Here’s the official synopsis, courtesy of Universal Pictures:

“Sometimes the rustle in the bushes actually is a monster.

Idris Elba stars in a pulse-pounding new thriller about a father and his two teenage daughters who find themselves hunted by a massive rogue lion intent on proving that the savannah has but one apex predator.

Elba plays Dr. Nate Daniels, a recently widowed husband who returns to South Africa, where he first met his wife, on a long-planned trip with their daughters to a game reserve managed by Martin Battles (Sharlto Copley), an old family friend and wildlife biologist. But what begins as a journey of healing jolts into a fearsome fight for survival when a lion, a survivor of bloodthirsty poachers who now sees all humans as the enemy, begins stalking them.”

Take flight in the new trailer for Minions: The Rise of Gru
Young Gru in Minions: The Rise of Gru.

Flying the friendly skies isn't always a pleasant experience for everyone. But the latest trailer for Minions: The Rise of Gru takes airline horror to a new level when the Minions fly the plane by themselves. For reasons that have yet to be explained, Kevin, Stuart, Bob, and Otto have taken over a passenger plane as the captain, co-captain, stewardess, and the rest of the crew. Judging by the way they perform their respective tasks, we're willing to bet it's their first time flying.

Most of the trailer revolves around the in-air hijinks of the Minions crew, including the unfortunate one who nearly flushes himself down the plane's toilet. But it's much worse for the human passengers, who have no idea what to make of the chaos surrounding them. We also get a brief glimpse of young Gru, with Steve Carell reprising his role from the Despicable Me movies.

Women inherit the Earth in new Jurassic World Dominion video
The women of Jurassic World Dominion.

In the original Jurassic Park, Jeff Goldblum's Ian Malcolm famously says "God creates dinosaurs, God destroys dinosaurs. God creates man, man destroys God. Man creates dinosaurs." But what really makes the scene is the response by Laura Dern's Dr. Ellie Sattler: "Dinosaurs eat man, woman inherits the Earth." That particular line appears to have inspired a new featurette from Universal Pictures' Jurassic World Dominion. At the beginning of the video, Dern talks about the unexpected impact she had as Ellie, simply because she wasn't held back by gender roles. Ellie was both a brilliant scientist and a capable heroine.

The influence of Ellie looms large on her successor, Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard), the leading heroine of the Jurassic World films. Howard is almost giddy when she gets to talk about how influential Dern was as Ellie. And the appreciation appears to be mutual from Dern.

New Top Gun: Maverick featurette takes the actors to the sky
Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick.

Do you feel the need? The need for speed? It's been nearly four decades since Top Gun drilled that catchphrase into our collective psyches. Later this week, Tom Cruise will reprise his role as Captain Pete "Maverick" Mitchell in Top Gun: Maverick. In the sequel, Maverick is training a new generation of Top Gun pilots, and he takes that duty seriously. Cruise also felt it was important to teach the new group of actors how to convincingly portray elite pilots. And as seen in a new featurette, Cruise insisted that the new performers learn how to fly for their roles.

As depicted in the video, the cast went through several months of training for the film. Perhaps the most harrowing part of that training was a simulated underwater evacuation. From there, the actors were taught how to fly their own planes in stages, and how to handle movement and spatial awareness inside the cockpit. However, Cruise and company took it a step further. Not only were the actors flying their planes, but they were also filming their in-cockpit footage for the movie. That's the kind of thing they don't teach you in film school!
