The VR Society’s ‘On The Lot’ is Back—and Fully Augmented

‘On The Lot’ is back—and now featuring AR—October 13 and 14 at The Lot in West Hollywood.

Last year, the inaugural VR On The Lot brought together major players from Hollywood, Silicon Valley, Europe, and China for a two-day exploration of the intersection between entertainment and technology.

Organized by the VR Society, presented by AMD Studios, and co-presented by Dell, “On the Lot” is back for its second year. Jim Chabin, President of the Advanced Imaging and VR Societies, explained that the latest edition of the conference has expanded to match the explosive growth of immersive technologies as a whole.

“Due to the response from the Hollywood and Silicon Valley communities, this year’s event will require double the sound stage capacity to hold our group and the demonstrations,” said Jim Chabin, President of the Advanced Imaging and VR Societies, in a statement.

In trying to highlight the best minds in both entertainment and technology, On The Lot gathered keynote speakers who could share insight about the VR/AR landscape from a variety of vantage points:

  • Robert Stromberg, Academy Award-winning filmmaker and Founder of the Virtual Reality Company
  • Jerry Zucker, Director/Writer/Producer
  • Roy TaylorCorporate Vice President of Media & Entertainment at AMD Studios
  • Tony ParisiGlobal Head of VR/AR at Unity Technologies
  • Gary RadburnDirector of Workstation Virtualization and Commercial VR/AR at Dell

This year, following major developments in immersive technology, the conference is adding Augmented Reality to the mix in a big way, with an entire AR track running on Day 2 (October 14). The new addition will include AR seminars for ARKit and ARCore developers and a slate of speakers who will share expertise in AR technology, creative, and investing.

“We have long wanted to showcase AR professionals and their new technologies,” said Chabin. “‘On The Lot’ allows us to bring them together with our VR leaders along with the Hollywood creative community, tap this collective genius to drive everyone’s success forward.”

In addition, Unreal Engine will premiere The Giant: Michelangelo’s David in VR to the public, which lets audiences get up-close with the iconic statue unlike ever before. Ascend the scaffolding and take in the astounding quarter-millimeter fidelity.

The VR Society functions as a consortium of different studios and companies. A partial list of exhibitors includes: AMD Studios, Barco, Create VR, Dell, Google, HP | Nvidia, Intel, Koncept VR, Legend, LOOT Interactive, Lytro, Positron, Sony Music, Technicolor, Time Inc., LIFE VR, Unity, Unreal Engine, VRC and DTS (an Xperi company).

The conference is held at The Lot in West Hollywood, known as home to Oprah Winfrey’s television headquarters (OWN), in addition to productions like Apocalypse Now, The Pink Panther, and Some Like it Hot.
