Lithodomos VR is bringing the world’s most important historical sights directly to your smartphone.
International travel in the year 2016 wasn’t exactly the hottest trend. So if what’s been happening this January is any indication of what we have to look forward to the rest of 2017, I don’t see it making a big resurgence anytime soon. With the current social climate being colder than absolute zero, many individuals will be discouraged from traveling to important landmarks and historical sites. This is where Lithodomos VR comes in.
Launched earlier this year, Lithodomos VR is an archaeology virtual reality company dedicated to delivering highly accurate reconstructions of Greek, Roman and other various worlds to virtual reality. The small team, led by PhD student Simon Young and Dr. M. Hamdi Kan, uses a combination of photogrammetry, texturing and mesh modelling to create 360-degree scenes of famous historical sites for viewing in VR headsets like the Oculus Rift, Samsung Gear VR, Google Cardboard and many others.
So far the adventurous organization has released 3D recreated sites from locations such as Paris, Rome, Athens, and Jerusalem. However thanks to receiving a whopping $900,000 in seed funding from Australian investors recently, the nine-member team will soon expand their efforts in an attempt to capture and recreate even more of the world’s most iconic locations for later viewing.
Lithodomos VR currently has two different mobile apps available, each featuring different geographical locations to explore. Ancient World in VR (available for free on the Google Play Store) takes you on an epic journey through Paris, Rome and Athens while Ancient Jerusalem in VR (available for $1.99 on the Google Play Store or $2.99 on the IOS App Store) transports you to the beautiful lands of Jerusalem. After that massively successful round of funding however, you can expect a lot more historical sites on the way in the near future.
