CraneMorley and SoCalGas Win! HoloLens Learning Solution as Response to the Pandemic

CraneMorley worked with California’s SoCalGas operations training team to develop an innovative remote training solution as a countermeasure to the pandemic restrictions to classroom attendance.  “If you have ever sat through a boring Zoom video remote class, you will appreciate the capability to ‘take the class out into the field’ for hands on learning from the safety of their homes.  Take a look for yourself,” invited Troy Segale, director of instructional design at training partner CraneMorley, Inc.

The SoCalGas instructor and field technician work together to engage the class in hands on learning by giving them a bird’s eye view of a natural gas meter set assembly procedure through the Microsoft HoloLens and its “head up – hands free” capability, streamed live to the class using the Microsoft Remote Assist and Teams applications.

“SoCal Gas is undergoing digital transformation. We are rapidly adopting new technologies and software applications with the goal of improving productivity and safety of our workforce. The HoloLens has proven to be a valuable addition to our arsenal,” stated Ron Christie, manager gas operations training for SoCalGas in California.

The award was given in the category of Pandemic Response innovations, recognizing the creative solution and the rapid adoption of the Remote Assist application to support remote learning.
