Mr. Mercedes VR Escape Room Hits Comic-Con

The interactive pop-up shop included both a VR and AR game.

For the upcoming season 2 premiere of Stephen King’s Mr. Mercedes original series, AT&T let Comic-Con fans enter a VR escape room inside Brady’s lair.

Located just blocks away from Comic-Con, The Mr. Mercedes Immersive Experience couldn’t be missed from the street. The black and bright yellow building had its own long line, just like everything else around the city during the week.

There was no shortage of interactive pieces to experience, which included creepy light projections, an augmented reality clue hunting game, and a VR escape room that had you hunting clues before time runs out.

In the roughly 15-minute ticking clock demo experience I dove into, the lead character’s lair was meticulously re-created with photogrammetry and utilized a mix of Atom View and Unreal Engine to set a realistic and creepy environment to try your hand at escaping. Built in collaboration with VR Playhouse and Double A Labs, I found myself virtually searching the room for clues and inputting them into a computer.

In addition to the VR escape room, fans of the original series also had the chance to enjoy an AR adventure game while waiting in line. Fans could download an app to scan different objects throughout the building to help Detective Bill Hodges crack the case and claim a reward at the end.

Much of the entire Comic-Con activation was filled with actual props from the show, recreating the physical worlds of Mr. Mercedes like Finders Keepers, Mercy General Hospital and Brady’s lair.

The series picks up a year after Brady Hartsfield’s thwarted attempt to perpetrate a second mass murder in the community of Bridgton, Ohio. Since the incident, Hartsfield has been hospitalized in a vegetative state. Retired Detective Bill Hodges has done his best to move on from his Brady obsession, teaming up with Holly Gibney to open Finders Keepers, a private investigative agency. But when unexplainable occurrences begin to affect hospital staff members attending to Brady, Hodges is haunted by the feeling that Brady is somehow responsible.

Season 2 of Mr. Mercedes will premiere on AT&T AUDIENCE Network on Wednesday, Aug. 22 at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
