The director of Edge of Tomorrow introduces his new virtual reality series with a new trailer.
It seems every week another big name in Hollywood enters the world of virtual reality. Just last week, the acclaimed director Alejandro Inarritu announced teaming up with Legendary and ILMxLAB to begin filming a VR short that follows a group of immigrants crossing the border between Mexico and the United States. And coming up this week, the inaugural VR On The Lot conference takes place at Paramount Studios, where we can expect even more top talent to reveal their latest VR projects.
Now, Doug Liman, the future-forward director/writer/producer best known for his work on the Bourne series, Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Edge of Tomorrow, is giving us a look at his first scripted VR series, Invisible.
The six-episode series was created in partnership with Condé Nast Entertainment (CNÉ), Jaunt VR, Samsung and Liman’s production company 30 Ninjas. The new series also boasts a strong creative team that includes Oscar-nominated screenwriter Melisa Wallack (Dallas Buyers Club) and Julina Tatlock as producer.
Set in modern day Manhattan, the series will unravel the secrets of a prominent New York City family, the Ashlands, blessed with a supernatural gift passed down through generations — you guessed it, invisibility. As capacity of their extraordinary ability continues to grow in power, the birth of an exceptional new child draws public interest and their family secret teeters on the brink of becoming exposed.
Specifically envisioned and written as a 360° VR series, this first trailer gives us a strong glimpse into what we can expect. With aerial shots, split-screen dialogue, and even a scene where you’re looking up from a freshly dug grave, this is going to be one fun ride made just for VR. Hopefully inspiring even more top name creatives to explore further, what is possible with a scripted VR series.
Speaking about Invisible at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this year, Liman likened the editing process to shooting with film, similar to his early work on Swingers, where it was necessary to shoot, edit, and then shoot again after taking sometime to review rough-stitched footage.
Invisible will be released soon on Samsung VR and on Jaunt’s VR app. Although meant to be viewed in VR, you can watch the preview trailer below:
