Finally, after nearly a year of non-stop rumor-mongering, we’re close to seeing what’s next on Google’s hardware docket. We’re expecting three new pieces of kit from the company’s Android hardware team: the Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, and the Pixel Watch.
Thanks to the leaky nature of the internet, we might already know what’s coming for us—and what we’ll be spending our money on this holiday season. Here’s how to watch the Made by Google event that will reveal the new hardware and a quick refresh on what we expect.
How to watch the Made by Google launch event
So, do you want to follow along with Google’s major announcements? Tune in Thursday, Oct. 6 at 7 a.m. PT / 10 a.m. ET. The event takes place physically in Brooklyn, NY. But you can follow along at home by streaming the event through the Google store or YouTube, which already features a slew of Pixel 7 and 7 Pro video teasers. What will Google announce?
Google teased a bit of what’s coming up on its main event page. We know for sure that the Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, and Pixel Watch will make their debut. All three gadgets were already teased earlier this year during Google I/O 2022.
Google also writes that it will “announce additions to the Nest smart home portfolio.” We think it’s the wired version of the new Nest Doorbell that Google mentioned it would release around this time last year. We’ll find out soon enough!
What’s in the Pixel 7?
We’re expecting Oct. 6 to be the official launch event for Google’s marquee Android flagship, the Pixel 7. We hope that the green hue that Google’s been touting in its materials is as lime-y and saturated as it looks in photos.
We know a few details about the Pixel 7. There’s already a Google store listing for the device, and Google has revealed the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro are powered by the next-gen Google Tensor processor—called the Tensor G2. Google promises “more helpful, personalized features to photos, videos, security, and speech recognition.”
Beyond that, the rest of the specifications are based on pure speculation. In August, 9to5Google showed off an alleged prototype of the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro floating around, with apparent proof of 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage in the smaller Pixel 7. An earlier FCC listing confirmed some of this. This keeps the Pixel 7/7 Pro offerings in line with its predecessor.
We also know a bit about the Pixel 7’s camera offerings—look at the renders floating around! The Pixel 7 has two rear camera lenses, while the Pixel 7 Pro looks to have an additional telephoto lens, like the Pixel 6 Pro. That telephoto lens will likely improve over the old one, as per more rumblings circulated in rumor circles.
While we don’t know how much the devices will cost or when they’ll be available, we know they’re coming this month. The Google store page says that all devices will be “shoppable” on the same day.
Why are we excited about the Pixel Watch?
The Pixel Watch is what everyone is after. This smartwatch has been through the rumor ringer in recent months. The device was discovered left behind at a restaurant in April, giving us a glimpse of what it might look like. We’re also hearing that battery life may not be up to snuff. A recent teardown for the Fitbit Android app revealed charging reminders programmed into the wearable to remind you to dock the watch before heading off to sleep. That’s leaving potential users feeling a little dubious about its capabilities, considering rival Samsung encourages its users to sleep with their Galaxy Watches to rack up data.
We do know Google built a custom processor for the watch and that it will likely run Wear OS 3. Back in May, Google promised an interface that’s “fluid and easy to navigate” and a UI that’s “more glanceable than ever.” It will also have an interactive crown on the side of the watch, akin to the Apple Watch.
If you’d like to build up a little excitement, you can visit the Pixel Watch’s landing page in the Google Store. We don’t know how thick it will be or its exact dimensions. And while we know it will be available in colorways that match the Pixel 7 lineup of devices, it’s unclear what those colors are.
There might not be buds
While Pixel Buds are featured in the marketing material for this particular Made by Google event, we will not likely see new earbuds. The Pixel Buds Pro already had its debut alongside the Pixel 6A.
