Montana Story trailer finds siblings in emotional turmoil

Some members of the media have suggested that there’s no room for anything at the box office that isn’t a blockbuster. But this May, Bleecker Street is challenging that notion by releasing a new drama, Montana Story. Scott McGehee and David Siegel wrote and directed the film, which opens up some old emotional wounds for a brother and sister.

In the new trailer for Montana Story, Erin (Haley Lu Richardson) returns to her childhood home for the first time in years, much to the surprise of her bother, Cal (Owen Teague). Their father is dying, but the reunion between Erin and Cal is barely cordial. That’s because Erin is still angry at their father for hurting her years before. And Cal is haunted by the fact that he could have stopped their father, but he couldn’t bring himself to act.

A subplot in the trailer suggests that Erin is determined to save the horse that she grew up with, even if it means finding a way to bring it back home to New York. But the heart of the story appears to be about Erin and Cal emotionally reconnecting and potentially finding the strength to forgive each other and themselves. Whether they can extend that grace to their father remains to be seen.

Bleecker Street has also released a synopsis for the film:

“From the acclaimed writer/directors Scott McGehee and David Siegel comes a neo-Western with an emotional tremor hiding beneath it. Two estranged siblings (Haley Lu Richardson, Owen Teague) return home to the sprawling ranch they once knew and loved, confronting a deep and bitter family legacy against a mythic American backdrop.”

Dakota Johnson doesn’t know who to love in Persuasion trailer
Dakota Johnson in Persuasion.

Compared to Pride & Prejudice, there haven't been quite as many adaptations of Jane Austen's Persuasion. But this summer, Netflix is making a new attempt with Dakota Johnson in the leading role of Anne Elliot. Anne is an intelligent young woman in the 19th century whose greatest regret is that she gave up her engagement with Frederick Wentworth (Cosmo Jarvis) because her family convinced her that he didn't have the right social standing or wealth. It's a mistake that Anne has lived with for years. But in the new trailer for Persuasion, Anne has a chance to make a different choice.

In the scenes from the film, Anne is immediately overwhelmed by Frederick's return to her life as a successful and handsome captain. The pain of their previous relationship lingers even as they become friends. However, there's a big complication in play since another suitor, Mr. Elliot (Henry Golding), has entered the picture. And now Anne must decide whether to pursue her old flame or move forward with a new love.

Lonely hearts need love in trailer for Mr. Malcolm’s List
Freida Pinto and Sope Dirisu in Mr. Malcolm's List.

Fans of Bridgerton, have we got a movie for you. Unlike Netflix's hit period romance, you'll actually have to go to a theater to enjoy Mr. Malcolm's List. The film stars Freida Pinto as Selina Dalton, a young woman living in England during the 1800s. What Selina lacks in funds, she makes up for in wit, intelligence, and spirit. However, Selina's life is changed when she accepts an offer from her friend, Julia Thistlewaite (Zawe Ashton), to humiliate Jerimiah Malcolm (Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù).

In the first trailer, it quickly becomes clear that Selina should never have agreed to Julia's plan. That dream of revenge was born out of Julia's rejection and humiliation when Jerimiah claimed that she didn't meet his list of requirements to be his bride. Selina was supposed to present herself as the perfect potential bride for Jerimiah, and then break his heart by claiming he was unsuitable for her list. The problem is that Jerimiah and Selina are clearly made for each other. But when the truth comes out, as it inevitably will, it could destroy their romance before it begins.

Montana Story’s Haley Lu Richardson discusses the gripping new drama
Haley Lu Richardson stands behind a truck door in Montana Story.

Montana Story is a quiet and measured film, but there are intense, messy emotions bubbling beneath its surface. Written and directed by Scott McGehee and David Siegel, the film centers on the turbulent relationship between a pair of estranged siblings, Erin (Haley Lu Richardson) and Cal (Owen Teague), who find themselves unexpectedly reunited on their family ranch. Brought together by their father's failing health, Erin and Cal spend most of Montana Story dancing around each other, making brief attempts to reconnect, but never acknowledging the traumatic event that separated them in the first place.

The film forces Teague and Richardson to carry the full weight of its story on their shoulders. If either actor's performance failed to feel authentic, then Montana Story would collapse in on itself. Fortunately, both Teague and Richardson are capable young actors and their performances in Montana Story are stunning. In Richardson's case, her work here just feels like yet another notch in the belt of an actor who has been consistently turning in starmaking performances for several years now.
