‘FlyInside Flight Simulator’ Preview – A Promising Start in VR-native Flying

FlyInside FSX , the crowdfunded VR plugin for Microsoft Flight Simulator X (2006) , was built well before first-party VR motion controllers existed, developed back in the DK2-era of 2015 as an ad hoc way of jumping into an already highly-detailed flight sim.

SIGGRAPH 2017: Optitrack Reveals Tracking Puck For Full-Body VR Immersion


When I tried the latest installation of The VOID earlier this year in Utah I encountered what I think is likely the pinnacle of immersion possible in 2017, with one major limit. Two more Optitrack pucks on each hand or arm and the use of Leap Motion (which recently got big funding ) or gloves could provide the final bit of finger tracking for complete full-body immersion.

The Void, a Utah-based enterprise, has already been knee deep in trying to create a virtual reality theme park complete with its own VR headset and experiences for the better part of a year now. Hollywood studios have tried using VR to put people in movies for years.

There’s a range of dimensions to visit from Utah-based The VOID, including Ghostbusters and Star Wars. The VOID employs Leap Motion hand tracking during part of the experience to help with the embodiment of colorful “Netizens.” While in Las Vegas for CES, UploadVR visited The VOID’s location in The Venetian for Ralph Breaks VR.
