Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) have taken a significant step towards revolutionizing pilot training in India. The two entities signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the Wings India 2024 expo, solidifying their collaboration on developing a virtual/augmented reality (VR/AR) training module for the Hindustan-228 aircraft.

This innovative partnership aims to leverage cutting-edge immersive technology to enhance pilot training and improve overall preparedness.

The signing of the MoU, witnessed by Mr. Sajal Prakash, CEO (Aircraft Complex) for HAL, marked the beginning of a collaborative effort to create a comprehensive VR/AR training module specifically tailored for the Hindustan-228 aircraft. HAL, renowned for its expertise in aircraft development and pilot training, will offer technical guidance and provide access to the Hindustan-228 aircraft for simulation data. On the other hand, IIT Madras, a leading institute in VR/AR research, will take on the responsibility of developing the immersive training module and software.

The VR/AR training module will provide pilots with a realistic and immersive environment, simulating various flight scenarios and emergency situations. By training in a safe and controlled setting, pilots can enhance their efficiency and effectiveness, reduce training costs, and be better prepared for real-world challenges. This collaboration not only benefits Indian pilots but also has the potential to export this technology to other countries operating the Hindustan-228 aircraft.
