HTC has announced a new set of tools allowing developers to build applications which take advantage of the Vive Pro’s stereo front-facing cameras, effectively turning the device into an AR headset dev kit. The new tools allow the cameras to capture depth, spatial mapping data, hand input, and seamlessly shift between VR and AR worlds. VR-optimised 3D creation tool Gravity Sketch is now available on Steam Early Access. Developed by a group of design engineers at the Royal College of Art, the software is ‘for everyone’, but its feature set has particular relevance to creative professionals, and could become an invaluable tool for industrial design visualisation. The HTC Vive hardware arrived soon after, prompting renewed interest in motion-tracked sketching and modelling.

Google Blocks, the 3D object creation tool for VR/AR app developers, just got a big update that includes new environments, improved object snapping, and a number of experimental features that the company says makes Blocks “more powerful and even easier to use.” An improved snapping function has also been included, which the company says address the “often unpredictable or difficult to control” snapping tool from the previous build.

Microsoft Maquette is a brand new VR tool from Microsoft which is all about prototyping spatial designs. Despite popping up out of nowhere, the tool looks like a quite polished first attempt even though it’s initially launching as a closed beta. Promotional footage shows an emphasis on prototyping layouts for spatial interfaces, including text layout, which is not seen in similar tools.

HTC’s VR app store is now live, giving you more options to discover and experience non-gaming content. Back in August at VRLA , HTC announced they would be opening a dedicated virtual reality app store called Viveport, which would be home to a host of largely non-gaming immersive content. HTC’s hope is that when you first purchase your Vive (yep, no Rift for now), Viveport will be the beginning of your journey when exploring virtual reality experiences.
