Overwatch League’s Dallas Fuel will resume in-person esports events in July

Overwatch League team the Dallas Fuel announced that it will resume live, in-person events at the Esports Arena Arlington on July 9. The Overwatch League team will be on stage at the event going up against the Houston Outlaws.

This is a big step toward esports to returning back to the physical world after more than a year of primarily online tournaments. This will be the first OWL match to be hosted at a team’s home arena as the league has been solely playing online matches. There have been smaller local events and tournaments that were closed to the public that happened this year, but this is significant as the match between Dallas Fuel and the Houston Outlaws will be one of the first major in-person events in the United States since the pandemic.

The Outlaws will be playing remotely outside of the arena. Masks will be required at the event and the arena will only be at 50% capacity.

It’s part of an emerging trend for esports, as events open up to the public again worldwide. In Europe, the League of Legends European Championship has started to have matches with teams in the same vicinity of each other for the first time since March 2020. Meanwhile, the Call of Duty League announced that it will be hosting LAN matches again for Major IV.

Tickets for the July 9 match are $15 and will be on sale on June 16 to the general public and June 15 for EnvyUs members.

Competitive esports at the professional level has seen large competitions that sold out stadiums such as Madison Square Garden in 2016 and certain games even set to be medaled events at the Asian Games 2022.

Riot Games to hold its first mobile esports tournament for Wild Rift

Riot Games announced its first international tournament, for League of Legends: Wild Rift, in Singapore this year. The Wild Rift Horizon Cup will cap off the 2021 preseason and will begin on November 13, with the finals on November 21. This is Riot Games' first mobile gaming esports tournament.

Eight regions from around the world are already competing in their regional tournaments to qualify for the Wild Rift Horizon Cup. The top 10 teams from the regional qualifiers will head to the Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Center to compete for the international title. The prize pool and the format of the tournament are yet to be announced.

Esports will be medaled events at the Asian Games 2022

The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) has announced that eight video games will be included as medaled events for the Asian Games 2022. The games will be Street Fighter V, Hearthstone, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds Mobile Asian Games Version, Dota 2, League of Legends, Arena of Valor Asian Games Version, EA Sports FIFA, and Dream Three Kingdom 2.

The Asian Games is a continental multisport event that is held every four years where athletes from Asia compete against each other in various sports for medals. It is very similar to the Olympics, however, it focuses solely on Asia. Video games have been part of the Asian Games in the past, but mainly were only demonstration events, so the medals won during these events were not counted toward countries' medal total.
