As mainstream VR/AR input continues to evolve – from the early days of gaze-only input to controllers and fully articulated hand tracking – so too are the virtual user interfaces with which we interact. At Leap Motion, our team is constantly pushing the boundaries of our interactive VR toolkit. We built the Leap Motion Interaction Engine to give developers the power to define the physical laws of the virtual universe. Hand Tracking leap motion

VR Design Guide

Leapmotion

Hand tracking and virtual reality are both emerging technologies, and combining the two into a fluid and seamless experience can be a real challenge. They vary widely from person to person, making them hard to track, but it’s important to understand their impact on meaning to the user. They are grounded and specific, making them easy to track. With 2D Leap Motion applications, this means adapting traditional UX design principles that condensed around the mouse and keyboard.

High-resolution imagery and low-latency head-tracking brought people into a virtual environment. Additionally, a leap motion 3D controller enabled them to interact with it. What comes to mind when you think of virtual reality ?

All you need to know on HoloLens 2

The Ghost Howls

Microsoft has conducted a study on thousands of people, to design a device that can fit a lot of different heads of different people and that is also able to accommodate glasses. This new HoloLens has for sure made a huge leap forward for what concerns comfort. The new HoloLens uses its integrated eye tracking to perform user authentication via iris recognition. The new HoloLens features: Eye tracking Full hands tracking (a la Leap Motion) Voice commands understanding.

Toward Truly Glasses-sized AR: First Look at DigiLens’ AR HUD Reference Headset

Road to VR

DigiLens , a developer of transparent waveguide display technology, is creating a reference headset aimed at wide FOV AR with hand-tracking, dubbed AR HUD. The AR HUD headset seen above is using one of Leap Motion’s ‘Rigel’ sensors, a reference product itself which brings wide field of view hand tracking to the AR HUD headset, though from the video it appears that the AR HUD currently lacks a means of positional head tracking.

Microsoft?s HoloLens 2 Will Reportedly Use Qualcomm XR1 And Cost Less

UploadVR

By design, the XR1 platform is a less expensive and somewhat scaled-down alternative to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845, custom-designed to support the less sophisticated head-tracking and processing demands of standalone mixed reality headsets. Depending on the quality of screen, audio, and tracking components a company chooses to pair with XR1, a headset could be available in the $400 price range, give or take.

This essentially cuts down the amount of lead time by letting customers prep before heading into their VR experience. Arcade and park owners can also opt to include embedded hand/finger trackers like Leap Motion, which sits flush inside the unit behind a window that’s transparent to IR. The public VR headset is also said to work with “hundreds of peripherals including wide-area tracking systems.” IR motion capture for VR, image courtesy OptiTrack.

So I switched to the Leap Motion Controller and quickly got my hands in my application. The new Arm HUD Widget by Leap Motion looked good, but I knew it wouldn’t be released for some time. Some of the issues I have with doing detailed work are due to limitations in the current generation of Leap Motion hardware – the tracking volume is small, and hand pose estimation breaks up near 3D objects in space – but it is surprisingly precise, low latency, and solid.
