Oculus Rift Pulls Ahead Again In December Steam Hardware Survey


I was half expecting to write that the combined power of the Vive and Vive Pro had allowed HTC to regain the top spot it once held for so long in December’s Steam Hardware Survey. Turns out the opposite is true; the Oculus Rift gained ground this month. HTC looked like it had Oculus on the ropes. HTC focused on Pro for its Black Friday promotion and Oculus cut $50 off of the Rift.

Oculus Headsets Pass 50% Market Share In September Steam Hardware Survey


Oculus headsets now make up more than 50% of VR headsets on Steam, according to the September Hardware Survey. They have only ever crossed this landmark twice in the past- before the launch of the original HTC Vive in early 2016, and before the launch of the Vive Pro and Windows MR in 2017, just after the Rift was cut to $399. The gains are driven by sales of the Oculus Rift S , which jumped from 10.85% in August to 13.03% last month.

The percentage of SteamVR users using an Oculus Quest grew 1.42% last month, an increase from 7.46% of users in May to 8.87% in June, according to Valve’s data. The survey scans components of your PC and uses SteamVR device logs to gather data on Steam users’ hardware.

According to Valve’s February Steam hardware and software survey, the Oculus Rift is now the most used VR headset on the Steam platform, taking the market share of VR headsets on Steam with a near 2% lead over its competitor HTC Vive. The latest results for the month of February show the Vive losing 1.58% marketshare since January’s survey, which, combined with Rift’s gain of 1.22%, shows Oculus’ headset taking majority hold on the platform.

Newer VR headsets like the HTC Vive Pro and Windows VR headsets are the winners in the October Steam Hardware Survey results. HTC’s enhanced VR headset, which Valve started listing on the survey last month , grew from 2.03% to 2.27% of overall VR headset usage following October. That’s not a huge amount but, when you add it to the standard Vive’s total, which grew from 42.36% to 42.7%, HTC is on 44.97%.

Oculus has had a few stumbles since it launched the Rift VR headset just over a year ago now.
