Google Unveils $79 Daydream VR Headset

The Daydream View VR headset will be $79 and goes on sale November.

During a press event on Tuesday, Google finally revealed their Daydream View VR headset, a lightweight VR headset that will be compatible with Daydream Ready phones.

The Daydream View headset was announced along with Google’s new Pixel phone in San Francisco, which is the first phone to be Daydream Ready.

The headset will cost $79 and will pair with the Pixel smartphone wirelessly, hoping to solve a number of usability issues when it comes to snapping in your phone to the headset, like that seen with Samsung’s Gear VR. For Google’s solution, just place your Pixel phone into the View headset, close the latch, and the system will auto-align the picture to make sure everything is lined up perfectly.

View is made of fabric that will initially launch in a Slate color, with Snow and Crimson coming at a later date. Google also showed off their controller that can be used as an input device while in VR.

Google also showed off some of your favorite apps and games that will be launching with Daydream, including a JK Rowling experience, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, that transforms the controller into a wand that you can levitate objects and cast spells.

Other VR content featured during the press event included Starchart, CCP’s Gunjack 2, New York Times as well as entire libraries of content from Netflix, Hulu and HBO. Google Play Movies, Photos, StreetView and YouTube will also make their way to the Daydream platform at launch.

The tech giant’s plans for Daydream were unveiled back in May, a hint of their hardware and software platform that runs off Google’s Android mobile operating system. Alphabet, Google’s parent company, is said to have been investing heavily on content for the platform. Daydream is hoping to launch with a wide breadth of content, which we can assume many more annoucements coming soon.
