All you need is a smartphone and some decent selfie skills.
Anyone who’s spent more than 20 minutes in VRChat will tell you just how difficult it can be to settle on the right avatar. The popular VR social platform offers an extensive library of original characters to choose from, not to mention a rapidly-expanding catalog of user-created avatars.
Up until this point, creating a completely unique avatar meant designing your own 3D model, rigging it for animation, and importing your creation into the 3D game engine Unity. Not only is this a lengthy process, but it also requires a certain amount of knowledge of 3D modeling software.
Thankfully, there’s Ready Player Me, a free-to-use 3D avatar creator from Wolf3D that allows anyone to create their own digital representation in a matter of minutes, no 3D modeling experience required. All you need to do is take a quick selfie and wait as the program automatically generates a custom 3D avatar based on your likeness.
You’re then free to make your own adjustments to the character using an okay range of hairstyles, skin tones, facial features, clothing options, and other customizable attributes.
This week, the easy-to-use software announced official support for VRChat, allowing you to export your custom 3D avatar directly to the social VR platform without the need for third-party software.
Head to vrchat.readyplayer.me on your smartphone or computer to start creating your avatar. Once you’ve finished, select “Import to VRChat.” You’ll then be asked to log in to your VRChat profile, at which point your character will automatically be added to your account. Demand is high at the time of this writing, so it may take some time before your new avatar is available for use. You can also download a copy of your avatar in the .fbx format.
In addition to VRChat, the Ready Player Me platform also support LIV, Mozilla Hubs, and MeetinVR.
