ILMxLAB, Lucasfilm, and Nissan team up to launch Star Wars: Droid Repair Bay in select dealerships.
Leia Organa needs your help. The Resistance is deep in conflict with the evil New Order and sustaining heavy damage. As a Resistance mechanic, it’s up to you to repair and maintain their crucial line-up of astromechs. Can you help keep the Resistance support droids alive long enough for our heroes to finish the job?
That’s basically the overall gist of Star Wars: Droid Repair Bay — Astro-Mechanic for the Resistance, a new VR experience that puts you in the critical role of a astromech technician for General Organa. Tied directly to the upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi film, you’ll use your own movements to repair an eclectic line-up of astromechs from BB-8 to some brand new never-before seen models with their own personalities and original designs.
Developed by ILMxLAB and Lucasfilm, the Nissan-sponsored experience will be available soon on the HTC Vive and Samsung Gear VR at select dealerships throughout the US, Mexico, and Canada. No word yet on if the experience will be available to download in the future, but seeing as permanently restricting access to physical Nissan dealerships would be a waste of a perfectly good, fully-developed Star Wars-themed VR game, i’d be willing to bet we’ll see it again on Steam or the Samsung Gear VR store sometime in the near future.
It’s cool to finally see a VR game that focuses on the often-overlooked side-kicks of the Star Wars universe. The motion control functionality of the HTC Vive dual controllers and the Samsung Gear VR controller make them the perfect platforms for a VR experience centered around the intricate repair of specific parts and components.
Disney and Lucasfilm have been doubling down on their commitment to VR this year having already released several experiences with more still on the way. December 16th will also see the official opening of the Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire location-based VOID VR experience at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando. The studios have also been involved in the AR scene as well, making their Star Wars: Jedi Challenges AR headset available for order this holiday season.
