Prime Video reportedly in talks about a God of War TV series

Sony Picture Television and PlayStation Productions are getting more aggressive when it comes to adapting classic PlayStation games for television. HBO’s big-budget adaptation of The Last of Us is currently filming, while Peacock ordered a Twisted Metal adaptation earlier this month. Now, Deadline is reporting that Amazon Prime Video is in talks to adapt God of War as a live-action TV series.

According to the report, The Expanse creators Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby and The Wheel of Time showrunner Rafe Judkins are collaborating on God of War with Sony Picture Television and PlayStation Productions. However, a deal with Prime Video doesn’t appear to have been finalized yet.

The first God of War game debuted in 2005 and introduced players to Kratos, a Spartan warrior and former follower of the Greek god of war, Ares. Kratos worshiped Ares until he was betrayed and compelled to murder his own family. In response, Kratos accepted a mission from the other gods to slay Ares. He emerged victorious and was elevated to become the new god of war. However, he discovered that Zeus feared his power and he was betrayed again. Subsequently, Kratos waged a war against Olympus itself and met Zeus in final combat.

In 2018, Sony reset the series with a new game, also called God of War. It takes place many years later, with Kratos and his son, Atreus, dealing with the gods of Norse mythology as the brooding father attempts to leave his violent past behind him. The franchise will continue later this year with the PS5 game God of War: Ragnarök.

Prime Video recently revealed that Walton Goggins will headline Fallout, another series based on a video game franchise. Prime Video is also in talks to adapt the Mass Effect games as well. This is all part of the streamer’s continued push into sci-fi and fantasy, which includes The Wheel of Time and the upcoming series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

Hot off the heels of the sci-fi hit Fallout, which you probably finished in a single night or two, you might be looking for a new show to sink your teeth into. Amazon Prime Video has a wide selection beyond the most-talked-about hit shows, including some underrated series that you might not know about or haven't considered watching.

Among the three underrated shows on Amazon Prime Video you need to watch in May, one is a British miniseries that will give you Quentin Tarantino and Coen Brothers vibes, another is a neo-Western with a sci-fi twist, and the third is a Canadian comedy-drama based on a ranch that has been going strong now for 17 years. Available to stream through Amazon Freevee, Boat Story gives Quentin Tarantino vibes on the small screen thanks to its genre-bending style and violent storyline. In the show, two strangers discover cocaine on a boat. But rather than turn it into the authorities, the pair, both down on their luck with nothing to lose, decide to sell it and split the funds. But a large cocaine shipment never goes missing without someone nefarious hot on its tail, as Janet (Daisy Haggard) and Samuel (Paterson Joseph) quickly realize.
Running from the police, dodging hitmen and gangsters, and desperate to get out of the harrowing situation, the unlikely duo meet gruesome, graphic, savage violence along the way. Boat Story beautifully weaves humor with the dark plot and heavy brutality, with fast-paced action through the short six-episode series.

What’s new on Amazon Prime Video in May 2024

Unlike some other streaming services in May, Amazon Prime Video is giving subscribers all of the movies that they can handle. Everything from classic Westerns like 3:10 To Yuma and comedies like Airplane! to dramas like Cold Mountain and more are arriving on May 1. Even the German thriller Run Lola Run is back on Prime Video. And if you haven't seen it yet, you should -- it's terrific.

Prime Video is also premiering new originals in May, including Anne Hathaway's new romantic drama The Idea of You, as well as Outer Range season 2, The GOAT, and Clarkson's Farm. George Clooney's period drama The Boys in The Boat is also arriving on Prime Video this month, but not until May 28.
