'Wordle' today: Here's the answer, hints for May 5

It's a sneaky one today!

Good morning, Wordlers! If you're here we're assuming you'd like some subtle clues about the May 5 Wordle answer to help you out, and fair enough — #320 is a bit of a cheeky one. If you couldn't crack today's Wordle answer and would just like to know what it is, you'll find it at the bottom of this page, and we've provided background, strategies and more for you on your way down.

Wordle was created by former Reddit engineer Josh Wardle as a gift for his puzzle-loving partner and went suddenly viral in late 2021. As we've reported previously, the original game was bought by the New York Times earlier this year for a very pretty penny.

What's the best Wordle starter word?

There are loads of options to try, some mathematically sounder than others. I personally like to make sure whatever I'm starting with hasn't been an answer already, just so I'm still in with a chance of getting that tasty 1/6.

What's with all these other Wordle-style games? What's a Quordle?!

If you just want more Wordle, Dordle and Quordle and so on are the chaotic spin on the OG that you seek. If you want a fun theme, try these fandom-specific ones, or go bigger with the Hollywood guessing games Actorle and Framed.

Is Wordle getting harder now?

Sorry to bust your bubble, but it's the same old Wordle, with some "harder" words given the boot. But you can always switch on Hard Mode, which means you can't throw in "strategic" guesses that don't have previously confirmed letters in them.

Not the day you're after? Here's the Wordle answer and clues for May 4.

Why are there sometimes two different Wordle answers on the same day?

This is down to some changes the New York Times has made to Wardle's original word list to remove obscure, offensive, or confusing words.

Here's a hint for the May 5 Wordle answer:

It's sports slang, and also probably better known as a name.

Wordle 320 is a 5-letter word that starts with...

H!

What's the answer to the May 5 Wordle?

Ready? Because the big spoiler is coming.

The solution to Wordle #320 is...

HOMER.

D'oh! This one's going to collect some Xs. It's interesting that the Times has kept HOMER in the word list — they removed HARRY, which is also a regular word but could be confusing given it's probably better known as a name. You could certainly say the same for HOMER, thanks to a certain big yellow doofus (sure, and some old Greek dude).

Didn't get it? No shame in that — this one had my Wordle group chat in a rage. Come back tomorrow for more helpful clues and hints — same bat time, same bat channel.
