Are you wondering why we don’t all have a VR or AR headset on our heads? I think there are three reasons: technological, economic, and psychological. There is no revolution taking place at the moment. If we look back years ago, spatial computing (AR and VR) made great progress. But its adoption did not go from 0 to 100. It, perhaps, went from 0 to 10.

Multiple trademark filings spotted by Bloomberg over the weekend support the notion that Apple’s long-rumored mixed reality headset will be running under the ‘Reality’ naming scheme. Trademark applications were filed earlier this month in the US, EU, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Costa Rica and Uruguay for three names: Reality One, Reality Pro, and Reality Processor, Bloomberg reports.

All aboard! In a video shared on Reddit earlier this week, independent game studio Foggy Box ( Startenders, Brunch Club ) shared footage of a prototype VR game called Infinite Trainset which uses the Meta Quest 2’s Passthrough technology to bring virtual train sets to life in the real world. Using the Touch controllers, players can lay down virtual tracks around their real-world environment to build complex circuits that interact realistically with flat surfaces such as walls and ceilings.

The absurdly popular battle royale game Fortnite may receive official VR support for Meta Quest headsets, according to HYPEX, a well-known Fortnite leaker with a solid track record. Snap Inc, the company behind Snapchat, announced it’s laying off a fifth of its staff and abandoning a number of projects as it bids to rebound with a more singular focus on becoming a leader in augmented reality in the future. Snap, the company behind Snapchat, says in a blog post it’s laying off 20 percent of its 6,400 employees, or around 1,300 people dispersed across multiple teams.

Meta Platforms Inc has declined to comment on its slated plans to open new Reality Labs offices in Durham, North Carolina amid a major downturn in the immersive tech branch’s operations, The News and Observer reported on Friday. The news comes weeks after the Menlo Park-based tech giant listed several jobs on LinkedIn to hire in North Carolina’s Research Triangle Park hub.
