South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust has been awarded funding by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), some of which will be used to setup a Virtual Reality Centre and Hub. According to the NHS trust, the funding will accommodate “world-leading” expertise in VR and immersive therapies to research mental health within a new research delivery hub at Bethlem Royal Hospital in Kent.

Another Axiom, the indie studio behind VR phenomenon Gorilla Tag , is opening up its next project Orion Drift to all Quest users tomorrow for its first server scalability test. Currently in closed early access, Orion Drift packages in Gorilla Tag’s immersive movement mechanic with some of the action of the now-defunct sports game Echo VR, promising to serve up an activity-packed social VR space for up to 200 players.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 provides players with a virtual reality recreation of Earth that offers a sense of unmatched realism. Despite initial launch setbacks, the game promises thrilling aviation adventures and limitless exploration. I'll never forget Christmas 1982. We had recently gotten our first computer, the IBM PC Jr, and I was desperately hoping that this new Flight Simulator game from a small and relatively new company called Microsoft was one of those ornately wrapped packages.

Evidence suggests Valve's next VR controller could include a D-pad and bumpers to act as a gamepad together too. XR enthusiast Brad Lynch and his team of SteamVR dataminers have discovered a new Valve controller codenamed Roy in the code of SteamVR, including an OpenXR extension , strongly suggesting it's a tracked controller, not a new Steam Controller.

Alien: Rogue Incursion now targets a February launch on Quest 3. While Alien: Rogue Incursion is out next month for PS VR2 and PC VR, you may recall the upcoming action-horror VR game had been delayed on Quest 3 until 2025. At the time, Survios confirmed this was done to provide "the Alien VR experiences that fans and players expect." While an official announcement hasn't yet been made, the Meta Horizon Store page now lists a February 13 launch.

Wall Town Wonders feels like a casual game from the future, when all-day AR glasses are the norm, and you can manage your growing town of tiny Sim -like inhabitants as they fly around your room in hot air balloons and live out their tiny lives as you live out yours. While visually captivating, the depth of gameplay isn’t enough to keep my attention for long, raising the question whether the genre is simply too early for the current generation of XR headsets.
