Cyberpunk VR MMORPG ‘NYX’ Promises A Futuristic Journey Through A Living, Breathing World

Choose your class, craft your weapon, and explore a vast dystopian world on Oculus Quest, PSVR, and PC VR.

Cyberpunk is all the rage at the moment. Perhaps it’s the dystopian futuristic settings or the heavy focus on cybernetics, virtual reality, and other bleeding-edge technologies. Whatever the case, upcoming projects such as Taika Waititi’s live-action Akira adaptation and CD Projekt RED’s Cyberpunk 2077 currently have audiences hungry for everything sci-fi.

Developer Exocubic Games aims to satisfy these cravings with NYX, an ambitious VR MMORPG set throughout a vast dystopian world packed with procedurally-generated quests, dangerous enemies, craftable weapons, and various other back-alley activities to complete.

Set in the year 2085 after a contaminated spacecraft drastically altered the planet’s atmosphere, NYX will have you exploring vast corporate-run supercities built above the remains of a forgotten past as you go toe-to-toe with a variety of foes using a wide assortment of guns, melee weapons, and what appear to be special abilities. According to the official website, players can choose between four main classes at launch, including the rogue and swordsman. Each class comes complete with its own unique subclasses, allowing you to customize your skill sets depending on your preferred playstyle.

Once you’ve settled on a class, you’ll then explore a vast open-world environment complete with main story quests, procedurally-generated side quests, and “special occasion” quests. Some of these missions will feature multiple outcomes, allowing you to directly impact the story based on your decisions. These quests will take you throughout a multilayered metropolis complete with a complex sewer system, underground villages, towering superstructures, and other unique environments.

Those looking for an additional challenge can even venture outside the gates of the city to explore an unforgiving wasteland. A proprietary AI system promises unique encounters each time you play. One minute you could be exploring an abandoned factory in search of craftable items and BAM! You’re attached by a random horde of desert raider outcasts.

Inspired by games such as Half-Life: Alyx and Boneworks, NYX promises its own fair share of realistic physics-based interactions. By providing support for the Oculus Quest, PlayStation VR, and PC VR headsets, Exocubic hopes to establish a cross-platform experience capable of supporting thousands of players simultaneously.

In a message posted to Reddit earlier today, the developers state that NYX will cost somewhere around $30 when it launches in sometime in 2022. Players will have the ability to purchase premium in-game cosmetics at an additional price, though Exocubic promises NYX will not feature any “pay-to-win” services.
