Spider-Man: Far From Home VR Is A Fun, Free Web-Slinging Simulator

Sony’s free Spider-Man VR game is a quick, but surprisingly satisfying experience.

Available for free via SteamVR and PlayStation VR, Spider-Man: Far From Home Virtual Reality puts you in the boots (onesie?) of your friendly neighborhood spider-man for a simple, yet engaging immersive experience that allows you to web-sling your way throughout the streets of Manhattan.

Your time to swing through New York like Spider-Man™ has finally arrived! In breathtaking virtual reality, you’ll finally have the chance to scale and swing from the highest towers in Manhattan. Just pick one of four Spider-Man suits and you’ll be launched into the clouds… but keep your eyes and ears peeled, a colossal and dangerous enemy is waiting. Only you have the power to find and confront New York’s latest attacker in this thrilling, swinging adventure.

You begin the experience standing in Peter Parker’s bedroom, at which point you’ll don the mask and begin your adventure. By completing the story mode, you can unlock four additional costumes worn by Spider-Man during his journies throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe, each with their own unique set of upgrades; this includes the new stealth suite featured in Spider-Man: Far From Home

Once you’re out-and-about, you’re free to sling your way throughout the city any way you’d like, so long as you remain within the transparent barriers that is. Using your motion controllers to fire webs, you can swing from any physical object you see, from the side of buildings and over-arching cranes, to the enemies themselves.

Speaking of enemies, you’ll want to keep a lookout while zipping through the skies as there are several drone-like enemies and one monstrous cyborg terrorizing the streets below. By quickly pressing down on the triggers of your motion controls, you can unleash a barrage of web bullets to take down waves of enemy drones and rip off the concrete armor protecting the massive robot boss.

If things start to get chaotic, simply shoot a web string at two opposing walls and bring your hands together to create a web wall and trap your foe. Just make sure to keep your web canisters are fully-stocked before heading into battle; if you need to reload, simply fire your web shooters off-screen, sort of like a classic lightgun arcade game.

Combat aside, the real magic of Spider-Man: Far From Home Virtual Reality is in the web-slinging. Despite the rough graphics and limited interactivity, casually flying above the streets of Manhattan as Spider-Man feels absolutely surreal, and the web-slinging mechanics, while simple, are extremely satisfying; especially for a free title. Thankfully there’s also a Free Mode which allows you to swing through buildings and wave at pedestrians at your leisure.

Developed by CreateVR, the same team behind the Spider-Man Homecoming VR experience, Spider-Man: Far From Home Virtual Reality is available to download free on Viveport, SteamVR, and PlayStation VR. Sony will also be bringing the experience to select Regal Cinemas this July using HP Reverb headsets and PC backpacks.
