Oculus Connect, an annual conference dedicated to showcasing the latest advancements in Oculus VR technology, is just around the corner and with it a new heap of rumors, announcements, and excitement. For those who were unable to attend the technology companies last event back in 2017, Oculus opened its doors to the general public with a multi platform live stream that took users directly inside the highly anticipated event for two days of informative keynotes and reveals.
This year, Oculus intends to kick their live stream game up a few notches. Expanding on its previous 2D live stream, Oculus will now be offering users the opportunity to view the action live while in VR. Using either an Oculus Go standalone device or a mobile Gear VR headset, users will be able to login to the Oculus Venues app and join other users for an immersive live stream of various developer keynotes and adrenaline-pumping esports competitions.
“We’ve streamed a fair number of different types of live events in Venues, like concerts, comedy nights, and sports, but OC5 brings us both live keynotes and esports, which are new for us,” spoke Oculus Product Manager and London Site Lead Mike LeBeau, in an official release. “Each new event creates new challenges and learning opportunities for us, as we try to capture the right vibe, get the right framing and viewpoints, and really convey the ambience of the real-world event in Venues.”
The VR live stream kicks-off September 26th with the official OC5 keynote at 10:00am PT. This will be followed by five glorious hours of intense VR esports competition beginning at 12:00pm PT; all leading up to the Onward Grand Finals at 6:00pm PT.
Tuesday, September 27th will begin with one of Oculus CTO John Carmack’s infamous unscripted keynote at 10:00am PT, followed by four hours of balls to the wall esports action in Echo Arena.
“For the keynotes, we’ll focus on switching live 180° cameras on the speakers, along with graphics integration,” says Supersphere Founder and Executive Producer, Lucas Wilson, in an official release. “The esports tournaments will blend live cameras and multiple gaming inputs. We’ll also debut brand-new technology that creates immersive outputs from the game engines themselves, for a true 180°/360° observer view of the gameplay.
“This is the first time that viewers will be inside this rich, more immersive look at gameplay. We worked closely with the talented teams at Facebook, Oculus, and ESL to build a complete set of immersive environments that fans will love.”
(UPDATE: 9.18.2018) Lucky enough to be attending in person? The VOID and ILMxLAB’s award-winning hyper-reality experience, Star Wars: Secrets of The Empire, will be available to attendees on the show floor. Here’s a brief synopsis of the exhilarating location-based experience:

Oculus Connect 5 kicks-off September 26th at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center in San Jose, California. User can view the action live on both the Oculus Go and Gear VR. Sorry Rift owners.
