We also know that this dream is very far away, and the estimates talk about between 5 and 15 years from now. There are many problems to be solved, technological and social to begin with, until we will be able to create the “next generation of the Internet”.

The explosion in XR technology and applications in the last few years means that there are a lot of new terms gaining prevalence. It can be hard to keep up. One that you may have heard – maybe even come across on ARPost – is “digital twin.” But, what exactly does that mean? What Is a Digital Twin? A “digital twin” is a virtual version of something that also exists as a physical object.

Surgeons call it ‘Man-on-Mars stuff.’ In one of the most complex separation procedures ever conducted, three-year-old conjoined twins Bernardo and Arthur Lima were successfully separated by medical professionals with the help of VR technology. According to the BBC , the revolutionary procedure lasted a total of 27 hours and included seven individual surgeries involving over 100 medical staff.

Due out in just two weeks, Red Matter 2 is promising to up the ante over its already well regarded predecessor, this time being built from the ground up to look as good as possible on Quest 2. We got to sample the game to see how it’s shaping up ahead of release. Developer Vertical Robot has boldly claimed that Red Matter 2 will be the best looking (realistically styled) game on Quest 2, and as we’ve played so far they appear to be well on track to make that a reality.

Meta this week released a new demo app called First Hand to showcase the kind of experiences that developers can build with the company’s controllerless hand-tracking tools. Controllerless hand-tracking has been available on Quest for years at this point, and while it’s a more accessible input modality than using controllers, controllers are still the main form of input for the vast majority of games and apps on the headset.

Last Thursday, online tourism aggregator Travelzoo revealed plans to debut a Metaverse Software as a Service (SaaS) eCommerce platform, with an estimated September release date. The firm introduced TravelZoo: Meta during its Second Quarter 2022 Performance presentation. The SaaS will debut as a browser-based platform, allowing users to interact with digital immersive travel experiences.

Now a UK-Brazilian team have done just that, which is thanks to detailed planning sessions which allowed the surgical team to model and rehearse the operation in VR from two different continents. As reported by BBC News , three-year-olds Bernardo and Arthur Lima were born conjoined at the cranium, also know as craniopagus twins.

Quest’s v43 software update has already rolled out on the Public Test Channel, however now it seems Meta is getting ready to unlock a number of long overdue video capture options, like the ability to record in 16:9 aspect ratio. Additionally, it appears some settings specific to the company’s upcoming headset Project Cambria have cropped up as well.

Another DLC release is coming to Real VR Fishing — this time, it’s set in Japan. Announced this week, the first installment of the Japan DLC will release for the Quest platform on August 18. The developers told UploadVR the paid content will include 10 new fishing spots for players to explore along with 58 new fish species to reel in. The Japan DLC follows on from the US West DLC, which released late last year.

IRL Studios announced that Gym Class , its popular VR basketball game on Meta Quest App Lab, has raised $8 million in a seed round led by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) with participation from Y Combinator. Other participants include Founders Inc., Todd and Rahul’s Angel Fund, Balaji Srinivasan, Zaza Pachulia, and a number of other angel investors. Named in Road to VR’s top 20 free games on Quest , Gym Class lets you shoot hoops and dunk on friends like you probably can’t on a physical court.

Starting August 5th, CCP is shutting down its servers for both EVE: Valkyrie and and sci-fi sports game Sparc (2017), putting a definite end to an era.
