Facebook Purchases Developer Behind Beat Saber, 360 Levels Coming Next Month

The studio will join Oculus Studios, but continue operating independently.

Earlier today, Facebook announced the acquisition of VR game developer Beat Games, the studio behind the hit VR rhythm-slasher Beat Saber.

In an official Oculus blog post, the company states that while the popular studio will be joining the Oculus Studios team, it will remain independent of Facebook in terms of content development. Oculus stresses that despite the change in ownership, the core Beat Saber experience will remain unaffected; this includes the custom songs and modifications being developed by the titles massive modding community.

“Today we’re announcing that Beat Games is joining us in our quest to bring VR to more people around the world,” states Mike Verdu, Oculus Director of Content, in the official blog post. “They will join Oculus Studios as an independently operated studio in Prague, continuing to create new ways for people to experience music and VR gaming. Most importantly, what the community has come to love about Beat Saber will remain intact. Beat Games will continue to ship content and updates for Beat Saber across all currently supported platforms, now with even more support from Facebook.”

“Beat Saber is a perfect example of why VR is so exciting—VR reimagines old genres and invents new ones. The team at Beat Games made a leap forward in innovation and design with the stellar blend of game mechanics and music in Beat Saber, and yet we know that they, along with so many other devs, are just getting started.”

Also included in the post was a long-awaited update on Beat Saber’s highly-anticipate 360-degree levels. Oculus has confirmed that the new game mode will be arriving as a free update on all platforms before the end of the year alongside a helping of new music.

Beat Saber is currently available for $29.99 on SteamVR, Oculus Rift/Rift S, Oculus Quest, and PSVR.
